Todays update from Microsoft (KB974571) makes Office Communication Server think it is an expired evaluation!

The updates I mentioned in a previous post here http://www.sole.dk/post/microsoft-security-bulletin-for-october-2009/

Happened to have an update that kills Office Communication Server 2007 all editions (R2/Standard/Enterprise) and Live Communication Server 2005 (and SP1 edition).

The error that comes up in the event logs is that the server believes that it is an evaluation and just expired with this message: “The evaluation period for Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 has expired. Please upgrade from the evaluation version to the full released version of the product.”

I also got this message in the event logs: “Error Code: C3E93C23 (SIPPROXY_E_INVALID_INSTALLATION_DATA)”

Event ids logged: 12290

A knowledge base article describing the problem just came online on Microsofts support website here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974571

It seems there is a simple fix, at least it worked for me.

Uninstall the following update: MS09-056: Vulnerabilities in CryptoAPI could allow spoofing, KB974571 and disable automatic updates, untill Microsoft fixes the problem. Then a quick reboot and everything works fine again.

Was this information helpfull ?

All you have to do to uninstall the update, is go into the servers control panel and select the updates tab, then select the update named KB974571 and select uninstall. Remember to turn automatic updates off to avoid it installing by it self.

  • Thanks for the info. I removed the KB, rebooted and everything’s great.

How do you uninstall it if you have xp sp3? That prohibits you from uninstalling certain security updates such as this one?
